Abstract

Crush syndrome is a serious clinical condition that frequently occurs in mass casualty events with serious injuries, including man-made disasters and natural disasters. Complications arising from crush injuries in injured people cause crush syndrome. If crush syndrome is not diagnosed and treated early, the mortality rate will be very high. Therefore, prehospital emergency medical services personnel must have adequate knowledge of crush syndrome recognition and treatment to optimize casualty care. One of the important conditions accompanying crush syndrome is hyperkalemia. In these patients, IV fluid replacement treatment should be started on the debris after reaching the patient and the patient should be transferred to the hospital without stopping. In the treatment of crush syndrome, potassium-free fluids such as 0.9% NaCl should be preferred as IV fluids. When faced with crush syndrome, pre-hospital emergency healthcare personnel should be able to quickly evaluate the case and start the necessary IV fluid replacement therapy at the scene to prevent acute renal failure and worsening prognosis. For this reason, pre-hospital emergency health services personnel having sufficient knowledge and equipment about crush syndrome will significantly reduce the mortality rate. This study provides an overview of crush syndrome in order to bring together intervention and treatment methods in the patient or injured patient who develops crush syndrome, from pre-hospital emergency medical personnel to the case and transfer to the hospital.
