This study was conducted to determine the healthy lifestyle behaviors of nurses and their relationship with health control locus. The population of this descriptive study was composed of nurses (520 nurses) working in the internal medicine and surgery departments of two state hospitals. Data were collected with a personal information form, Health Locus of Control Form B, and Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale-II. Descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson correlation analyzes were used in the analysis of the data.
The mean age of the nurses was 36.02±8.77 years. Of the nurses, 81.5% were women, 58.9% were undergraduate and graduate graduates, 52.4% were in internal medicine clinics and 87.1% were clinical nurses. While more than half of the nurses (51.6%) stated that they care about health moderately, the majority of them (71.8%) stated that they did not smoke, do not use alcohol (88.7%), and did not have a chronic disease (80.9%). The mean score of the Nurses' Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale was determined as 131.77±18.28 and the total mean score of the Locus of Health Control Scale was determined as 69.08±11.27. It was determined that there was a statistically significant positive correlation between the mean scores of both scales (r=.622; p=.01). In addition, a significant difference was found between the nurses' caring about their health and the mean scores of both scales sub-dimensions (p<0.05). It was determined that the mean scores of nurses who evaluated their health level as good, self-actualization, health responsibility, nutrition, interpersonal support, stress management and internal control were significantly higher.
It showed a positive relationship between Nurses' Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale and Health Control Locus. It was observed that nurses who perceive their own health status as good have higher self-actualization, fulfilling health responsibility, nutritional behavior, interpersonal support level, stress management and internal control levels.
